Patchy connection

I have had trouble blogging as the internet connection has been so patchy lately. When I think of something to blog about, I can't get on; and when I can get on, my mind is blank!

We've had a great week with the little kids this week though. Quite windy, but the mornings were good each day, and we had a lot of sandpit plan, and general 'out-and-about-ness'.

Computer....

I have had a computer melt down this week - followed by a resurrection!

Bern was on the phone to the Telstra technition to fix the internet problems we've been having. He moved some plug on my computer - and it died!!!!

The computer repair man (it's still under warranty) picked it up Tuesday morning - and delivered it back all better on Tuesday afternoon! I'm so happy!

(I was afraid I'd have to finish the essay on the laptop.)

Google Earth

I've been trying to think of cool stuff to do with broadband. One of the first things was to get Google Earth. (Click here to go to the download page.) You can use it on dial-up, but it's v--e--r--y s--l--o--w.

Google Earth is a programme which lets you zoom in to addresses anywhere on the planet. I think it uses sattelite images and local mapping programmes. Anyway, the detail is much better for the city then country areas. (I tried looking up Granddad's house, and couldn't get it very well at all.) You can date the images if you look at recent changes in your neighbourhood. For example, the bypass is not shown in our city maps. But we have our current car.

It also gives you instructions on how to get from A to B. Try asking for directions from somewhere in Europe to somewhere in America!

Finally got broadband

We have just got broadband on my computer. (The other computers in the house have to wait until we get the wireless kit and connectors to get them connected to it.) I'm having to internet surf - just because I can!

Certainly makes blogging faster. And you still don't have to have anything much to say :-)

A new computer AT LAST

I have been away at a national Playcentre meeting this weekend, presenting papers for a working party I have been on. Turned out to be very busy, but the working party is now disbanded, so fewer weekends away in future. (Yay!)

On Saturday, via a flurry of text messages, we agreed to get me a new computer, and Bern went out and purchased it. So I arrived home to find it set up and good to go! Great excitment. (Thanks, Bern.)

I've been frustrated with my set up for a while (crashing and so forth), and I keep finding new software that I can't run on my old machine. It was time to bite the bullet and pay for a new harddrive. (I'm now going to be wanting some new software - inevitable expense!) Apart from having to get my files off the old machine I just have to adjust the settings to how I want them.

The new machine has a DVD player. Bern's computer already had one, but my machine has the big screen, so much better for watching movies. We haven't had TV in the house for 10 years, so this is going to be popular with the kids I'm sure. Two problems here: other house members wanting MY computer to watch DVDs; and ME wasting time watching them!
